BIO
"Russian technique and French charm" a reviewer wrote after Singer’s interpretation of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. A flattering remark, which the years spent with cellist Walter Grimmer, himself a Gendron student, could certainly explain.
Fascinated by chamber music from the youngest age, Singer became the Swiss Piano Trio cellist quite naturally in 2000. From then on, he participated in the ensemble’s artistic development and successively won the 1st Prize at the Caltanissetta International Competition (I), the 1st Prize at the International Brahms Competition (A) and the Swiss Ambassador's Award.
After sixteen years of an international career through more than fifty countries across all continents, numerous recordings and hundreds of concerts in venues such as London Wigmore Hall, Zurich Tonhalle, Geneva Victoria Hall, Amsterdam Concert Gebouw, Moscow Conservatory Great Hall and many more, Singer chose to bring his trio collaboration to an end. Since then, he has reoriented his activities towards recital, teaching and concert organization.
With his longstanding accomplice André Fischer, a wonderful musician and guitar virtuoso with whom he plays in an outstanding cello & guitar duo since the adolescence, Singer appears more and more in works which the duo developed and adapted during his numerous years of collaboration. Indeed, singer & fischer expand their repertoire through transcriptions including Schubert’s arpeggione sonata, Debussy’s cello sonata and “l’Histoire du Tango” by Piazzolla. Recently, the ensemble gave an unpublished version of Piazzolla’s double concerto for guitar and bandoneon with star violinist Pierre Amoyal and the Lausanne Camerata. In 2016 a first (but not last!) recording devoted to Bach’s sonatas for viola da gamba (cello) and harpsichord (guitar) was published by the Italian label Stradivarius.
With world famous organist Guy Bovet, Singer also performs regularly, whether in an original repertoire or in adapted works such as Franck’s cello sonata in which the piano part has been transcripted for organ by Bovet himself.
Convinced that every musician should be interested in the contemporary music, Singer played as principal cellist in the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain during a decade. During this period, he created numerous works and collaborated closely with composers such as G. Aperghis, F. Hoch, J. Levine, Mr Wettstein, J. Wildberger, J. Wyttenbach, etc.
During the last twenty years, he recorded for the labels SwissPan, Audite, Claves, Acanthus Music, Grammont, Stradivarius and made broadcastings for Espace 2, DRS 2, SF1, RTSI, ORF, Vietnam National TV, Australia ABC, Radio Television Hongkong, Venezuela State TV, CBC Canada and many others.
